Jon and i had just finished doing a new roof and had picked up the cash. With a grand each burning a hole in our pockets we wanted to do something different than go the mazeppa. Jon phoned his dad no answer but we decided to go to see him anyway. We filled to van up with deisel and jon went in and paid for the fuel and brought the verve album urban hymes. i was driving and jon was in charge of the beer and the music (bad move). Jon put the verve tape in and pressed play the 1st song was ok then the 2nd song The Drugs Don't Work came on, at this stage we're 10mins into a 1 1/2 hour drive. the song finished jon rewound the tape and played it again and again and again and again none stop for about a hour, by this stage i ejected the tape and threw it into the back of the van, to which jon climbed into the back kicking me in the face as he climbed over got the tape kicked me in the head again as he climbed back over put the tape back in and played this song over and over again till we got to his dads house. His dad wasn't in so we went for a curry. Whilst in the curry house the phone goes it was john jons dad, asking us where we were? turns out that as we were going to weston his dad was coming back to birmingham. he didn't answer his phone as he had a copper behind him on the motorway. So we finished our curry and jumped back into the van to drive back home I had hidden the verve tape which jon didn't like i put the radio on 1st song that came on was the drugs don't work to which jon sang it word for word in a very loud voice. Everytime i hear the song it always makes me smile. the lyrics have even more a special meaning now that jon has passed away
